Spider-Man has helped save the city from disaster countless times, but his latest adventure will make the Empire State more amazing, according to the governor.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Wednesday that the wall-crawler’s latest big-screen story is the biggest movie production New York history, generating thousands of jobs across the state and millions in revenue.
This is the first time a Spider-Man movie will be filmed entirely in New York state, and Cuomo, who hails from Queens like the Marvel superhero’s alter ego Peter Parker, said the production would be a win-win for New York.
“New York has the resources, talent and locations to help make ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ a blockbuster hit,” the governor said.
The previous four Spider-Man movies had scenes filmed on location in Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn, but the majority of the shoots were in California studios.
The 150-day shoot for the tentatively titled “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”, which began last month, has already included locations such as a funeral scene at a Queens cemetery and an action scene on Fifth Avenue in midtown last week.
Although the plot of the film, which stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Jamie Foxx, is under wraps, director Marc Webb has teased Spidey fans with Twitter photos of the on-location work.
In addition to the scenes filmed on location in the city, the movie will shoot a chase sequence in Rochester, as well as studio scenes in Brooklyn and Long Island, the governor said.
Cuomo added the movie will create 3,500 jobs and cast 11,000 extras to bring the web-slinger’s world to life.
Not only will the production generate millions of dollars in permits and the use of New York studio space, the governor touted the ample money it would also spend on local hotels, catering services and other establishments.
