Gay rights activists plan to march in huge numbers in Greenwich Village Monday, responding to the murder of a gay man from Harlem early Saturday morning.
City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and other elected officials are expected to join LGBT groups and other activists at Monday’s rally, where they will speak out against attacks like the killing of Marc Carson at midnight on Saturday.
Police say Elliot Morales, 33, approached Carson, 32, and his partner at the corner of West 8th Street and Sixth Avenue and shouted homophobic slurs before fatally shooting Carson in the face. A nearby cop arrested Morales shortly after the incident.
Many are stunned by the violence, which is the latest in a series of anti-gay attacks in the city recently.
“As a gay man, this hits really close to home. It impacts me in a personal way,” Wendell Bryant, 29, of the Bronx said as he passed by a makeshift memorial at the crime scene Sunday.
The march begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center offices at 208 W. 13th St. and will end with a rally at the crime scene.
