There’s one New Yorker who thinks the Citi Bike program is a “road to somewhere.”
David Byrne, founding member of the Talking Heads, was one of the 15,000 annual members who signed up for the program and was on hand for its kickoff news conference at the Brooklyn Bridge Monday.
The rocker and bike enthusiast said he plans on using the service frequently from his Chelsea pad.
“It’ll come in handy,” the 61-year-old Scotland native. “If I want to take a quick trip, it’s easy.”
Byrne said he has used similar programs in Europe and said they helped boost mom-and-pop shops, and that users in other cities tended to frequent the stores near where they parked.
Byrne predicted that naysayers of the Big Apple version will change their minds quickly.
“It opens up the city,” he said. “It changes people’s mental map of the city.”
