The mayor kept mum about Eliot Spitzer’s surprise run for city comptroller, except for saying that everyone is entitled to a shot at public office.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg told reporters at a news conference that voters will have to decide whether the former governor is fit to be the city’s comptroller despite his prostitution scandal.

“Everybody has to judge what someone is going to do in the future, that’s what is important,” the mayor said. “That’s the democratic process.”

Bloomberg later said he thought Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer was a “confident guy,” and a good elected official. He refused to say whom he would vote for in the election.
